41. Winners

August 14, 2009

The list of winners is going to be long.

I can tell you that the winners are going to be the people that take the time to produce content on a regular basis. Local businesses suffer from being understaffed and overworked. While small business owners are passionate about their work they often fall short when it comes to self-promotion. Local businesses have to break free and set aside time to promote themselves.

As painful as you might envision self-promotion or writing an article, we live in a time where it is a requirement of owning a small business. Just like answering the phone or taking care of the bills producing content is a task that you have to make time for.

When I owned a small interactive agency my business partner and I often had to take a step back and acknowledge that we needed to do a better job of marketing our own firm.

There is always room for improvement and there will always be a list of excuses, but making time to self-promote is critical. The businesses that add writing content to their weekly to-do list will rise to the top.

Obviously, it takes an audience to be heard. The local top dogs are going to be the businesses that discover where their potential customers are searching for their services. The people that can figure out where their clients are looking for products online will have the best chance of successfully communicating their message to an appropriate crowd. It takes an audience and it takes the right types of information for Web content to work it’s magic.

There are tons of nuances and angles to approach the subject matter for your content. Businesses that can accurately envision what potential customers are seeking and faithfully serve it up will be ultra successful. The story is the same online as it is in general business terms. Professionals that service a need and provide answers are the same businesses consumers are going to patron. If you are providing answers online it’s not a hard leap for consumers to engage with you offline.

The winners are going to be those businesses that can successfully diversify their presence and reach new consumers. Local Businesses have to realize that there are tons of online advertising tactics available to them. It’s on local business’s shoulders to try new mechanisms. Companies that seek out alternative avenues while maintaining a strong presence in highly trafficked spots are better positioned to reach new customers.

The leaders are going to be the companies that can activate their army of loyal followers to effectively spread their message. The Web has amazing viral capabilities.  Businesses that can embrace their base and convince their existing clients to talk about them on the web will see the rewards immediately. Positive feedback on the Web drives consumer confidence and almost always translates into new sales.

Crowning the winners will be easy since the Web naturally sorts them out. The line between winners and losers will be a decisive cut. There will be local businesses that choose to produce content and those that will continue to ignore the Web. As a business professional the choice is yours.
