PURPOSE: Help DMOZ define your business. Once you submit it to DMOZ they will make it available to other directories.

SELLING POINTS: The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. The Open Directory data is made available for free to anyone who agrees to comply with the DMOZ free use license.

  1. Go to dmoz.org

    Note: Do a quick search in the dmoz.org directory to be sure your site isn’t already listed.

  2. In the search field, enter your company name
  3. Click the “Search” button

    Note: If your business is listed nothing further is required.

  4. If no results are found, return to the homepage, by clicking the “back” button in your browser

    Note: The category links will help DMOZ define your business

  5. On the home page, click on the category link that is most relevant to your business.
  6. On the category page, click on the link that most accurately describes your business
  7. On the overview page, click on the link that most accurately describes your business
  8. On the topic page, click on the link that most accurately describes your business

    Note: Continue to “drill down” until you have successfully categorized your business

  9. In the upper right, click on the “suggest URL” link

    Note: Some categories do not have “suggest URL” or “update URL” links. These categories don’t accept submissions, so you should find a more specific category for your site.

  10. On the “Submit a Site to the Open Directory” page, take a moment to read through the instructions
  11. Scroll down the page to the “Site URL” section
  12. Enter your URL in the open field
  13. Scroll down the page to the “Title of Site” section
  14. Enter your business name in the open field
  15. Scroll down the page to the “Site Description” section
  16. Enter a brief description in the open field
  17. Scroll down the page to the “Your E-mail Address” section
  18. Enter your email in the open field
  19. Then verify usage by entering the text on the image
  20. Scroll down the page to the “Submission Agreement” section
  21. If you agree with the submission guidelines and terms of use, click the “Submit” button
  22. Congrats! You have successfully submitted your site.
